Aftercare decides how a hair transplant looks a year later. The surgery lasts one day; the healing takes twelve months. When you compare clinics in Turkey, aftercare is the part most patients forget to ask about and the part that separates a clinic that finishes the job from one that finishes the operation. This page explains what proper aftercare includes and what to ask before you book.
The grafts are not secure in the first three days. A clinic should keep you under observation on the day of surgery, perform the first wash itself rather than leaving it to you, and give you written instructions in your own language. You should sleep at a 45-degree angle, avoid touching the recipient area, and avoid anything that raises blood pressure in the head.
Ask the clinic directly: who performs the first wash, on which day, and is it included in the price?
Between the second and fourth week most transplanted hairs fall out. This is called shock loss and it frightens patients who were not warned about it. The follicle stays in place; only the hair shaft is shed. A clinic that prepares you for this in advance is a clinic that has followed enough patients to know what worries them.
New growth usually starts in the third or fourth month. By month six you see roughly half of the final result, and the density settles between months nine and twelve. Any clinic that promises a finished result at month three is either describing a different procedure or is not being straight with you.
Five questions that reveal how serious a clinic is about aftercare:
At Prime Hair Transplant Clinic in Istanbul, hair transplant procedures are performed by Dr. M. Resat Arpaci, who has worked in hair restoration since 2002 and has performed more than 10,000 procedures. Patients receive written aftercare instructions and can reach the clinic in their own language after returning home; the clinic serves patients in English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish and Arabic.
Aftercare quality is measured by three things: scheduled follow-ups at months 1, 3, 6 and 12, direct access to the clinic in your own language after you fly home, and the surgeon personally reviewing your progress photographs. Ask any clinic to confirm all three in writing before you book.
The scabs clear in 7 to 10 days and you can normally return to office work within a week. Transplanted hairs shed between weeks 2 and 4, regrowth starts around month 3 to 4, and the final density settles between months 9 and 12.
It should be. A good clinic performs the first wash itself, usually on the second or third day, and teaches you the washing technique before you leave. If a clinic sends you to your hotel with a leaflet and no supervised wash, treat that as a warning sign.
Shock loss is the shedding of transplanted hair shafts between the second and fourth week. It is expected and temporary; the follicles remain in place and produce new hair from the third or fourth month onwards.
